What is SEO

The definition of SEO acronym stands for “search engine optimization.” SEO not only is a strategy to exposure to your business it is the engine room where engineers use coding to help your website rank to the highest position for search results. SEO is where you add tracking analytics, meta-tags, and sitemaps to help search engines to crawl your site. SEO is the practice for increasing both the quality and quantity of website traffic, as well as exposure to your brand and business, through non-paid traffic (also known as “organic”) search engine results.

SEO strategies include link wheels where all you social media accounts, blogs and websites are interlinked.

As SEO experts with over 30 years in the marketing industry we know a thing or two about search engine optimization and how to drive real visitors to your website that convert into sales, and that means a ROI both you and us can be proud of.

Search engines

Search engines are online directories that hold information such as data, websites, blogs, images pdfs, software programs, and social media platforms. Search engines crawl billions of pieces of information and analyze thousands of equations to determine which content is most likely to answer your query.

Search engines use algorithms that catalogue all available content on the Internet (web pages, PDFs, images, videos, etc.) via a process known as “crawling and indexing,” and then analyze how well the data matches the query in a process we refer to as “ranking”.

Which search results are “organic”?

Organic or natural listing is where the website owner has not paid for (PPC) advertising to the search engines such as Adwords for example.

Search engine results pages often referred to as “SERPs” are filled with both advertising and dynamic organic results formats (called “SERP features”). Some examples of SERP features are featured snippets (or answer boxes), including ‘People Also Ask’ boxes, image carousels, etc. SERPs also can include Google Business Snippets propagated from Google MY Business. Your website could even be featured on the top right corner of a search results page with the information of your business to include a telephone number, address, opening times, and reviews.

For example, if you search for “Cardiff weather,” you’ll see a weather forecast for the city of Cardiff directly in the SERP instead of a link to a site that might have that forecast. And, if you search for “pizza Cardiff,” you’ll see a “local pack” result made up of Cardiff pizza places.

Some SERP features on Google are organic and can be influenced by SEO. These include featured snippets (a promoted organic result that displays an answer inside a box) and related questions (a.k.a. “People Also Ask” boxes).

Ranking

With the number one question, how long will it take for your website to be ranked and seen on the first page of Google? This will determine many factors such as how well your website is optimized, what keywords you are ranking for, what kind of domain you have, is it an acronym, a brandable made-up word or is it an exact match searchable keyword or phrase. Also how many times in a week or month do you update your content. For us we have found using keyword enriched domain names on a blogging platform such as WordPress, your website will rank within a matter of weeks rather than months. If you have original content and update your site regularly and include backlinks your website will be on the first page of Google in no time.

Whether it’s a desktop or a mobile device, boosting search engine rankings is only one part of the equation. You still have to do some technical coding and SEO is not for the faint-hearted. Once you reach the number one spot you have to maintain your global positioning and that is by consistently updating your site with new content, otherwise, you will drop positions.

At ‘Marketing Cardiff Cymru’, we do not believe in resting on our laurels. We strive for excellence with each and every client that we work with.

SEO is important because

Whilst paid advertising (PPC) can get you good results and get you on the first page of Google immediately providing you have a budget for keyword bids, this can prove costly in the long run especially if you are on a tight budget.

Having organic search results shows credibility to savvy searchers, and receives way more clicks than paid advertisements. On average 1-2% of people who view an advert will actually click it to read more. So if you have affiliate links and you want to make money you will have to have at least 1000 visitors a month to make £10 – £20 based on your affiliate link being £10.

In a nutshell: SEO has ~20X more traffic opportunities than PPC on both mobile and desktop.

SEO is also one of the only online marketing channels that, when set up correctly, can continue to pay dividends over time. If you provide fresh original content on a regular basis search engines that crawl your site will see your site worth ranking, whereas advertising needs continuous funding to generate traffic. Optimizing your site properly will help deliver better information to search engines so that your content can be correctly indexed and displayed within search results.
